We paid homage to one of the earliest ancestors in Chinese history & civilizations, Yan Emperor 炎帝. It is said that the earliest ancestors of Chinese people are Huang Emperor 黄帝 & Yan Emperor 炎帝, hence the Chinese phrase of 炎黄子孙 (offspring of Yan & Huang Emperors). There was a story on how the two fought each other but in the end the two leaders and their tribes gang up together. you watch the you tube video here.
