Tsim Sha Tsui vs Central: Where Should You Stay in Hong Kong for a First Trip?

Choosing where to stay can shape your entire first Hong Kong trip. Two of the most popular bases are Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon side and Central on Hong Kong Island — but they offer quite different experiences.

✈️ The Traveler’s Question

Asked on September 22, 2026

First trip to Hong Kong — would you stay in Tsim Sha Tsui or Central?

Which is the better base for sightseeing and getting around?

🤖 AI Travel Planner Answer

Both are excellent locations.

But they suit slightly different travelers.

For many first-time visitors who want the classic Hong Kong sightseeing experience, I would start by looking at Tsim Sha Tsui (尖沙咀).

If you’re more interested in being based on Hong Kong Island, with Central, Sheung Wan, SoHo and nearby neighborhoods at your doorstep, then Central (中環) becomes very attractive.

The important thing is that this isn’t really:

good area vs bad area.

It’s:

Which side of Hong Kong would you rather come home to every evening?

🌃 Why Stay in Tsim Sha Tsui?

Tsim Sha Tsui — usually shortened to TST — sits at the southern tip of Kowloon facing Victoria Harbour.

For a first visit, its biggest advantage is simple:

you’re right in the middle of classic tourist Hong Kong.

Depending on your exact hotel location, you can be close to:

  • Victoria Harbour
  • Avenue of Stars
  • Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade
  • Star Ferry
  • shopping
  • restaurants
  • MTR connections

And then there’s that view.

Walk down toward the waterfront in the evening and Hong Kong Island is sitting across Victoria Harbour in front of you.

For a first-time visitor?

That’s quite an introduction. 😂

⛴️ TST Has One Particularly Beautiful Transport Option

You don’t always need to take the MTR between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.

You can take the Star Ferry.

The ferry connects Tsim Sha Tsui and Central, so staying on the Kowloon side doesn’t mean Hong Kong Island is difficult to reach.

According to the current Star Ferry timetable, the Central–Tsim Sha Tsui service operates frequently throughout the day.

👉 Check the current Star Ferry timetable and fares

And frankly, this is one form of public transportation I’d happily classify as sightseeing too.

You’re crossing Victoria Harbour.

For the price of public transportation.

🐞 Approved.

🏙️ Why Stay in Central?

Central gives you a different Hong Kong experience.

You’re on Hong Kong Island, close to the city’s historic commercial core and within easy reach of neighborhoods such as:

Central → Sheung Wan → SoHo → Mid-Levels

This side may appeal more if your Hong Kong wishlist includes:

  • neighborhood wandering
  • cafés and restaurants
  • bars and nightlife
  • historic streets
  • Man Mo Temple
  • Central–Mid-Levels Escalator
  • easy access toward Victoria Peak
  • exploring Hong Kong Island

Central can feel less like you’re looking at Hong Kong Island and more like you’re living inside it.

That’s a meaningful difference.

🚇 Which Is Better for Transportation?

Honestly?

Both are strong.

Tsim Sha Tsui has excellent rail connections, while Central is one of Hong Kong’s major transportation hubs.

So I wouldn’t choose between them simply because someone says:

“This one has better public transportation.”

That’s too simplistic.

Your exact hotel location matters more.

A hotel that’s a two-minute walk from an MTR entrance can be much more convenient than another hotel technically located in the “better” district but requiring a long walk every time you go out.

🐞 ChinaTravelBUG Tip: Look at the Hotel, Not Just the Neighborhood

This matters enormously in Hong Kong.

Don’t book a hotel simply because the listing says:

Tsim Sha Tsui

or:

Central

Open the map.

Look at the exact property.

Check:

hotel → MTR entrance → airport transportation → places you’ll visit

A few hundred meters can make a surprisingly big difference when you’re walking repeatedly every day.

Especially in summer.

Especially with shopping bags.

Especially when your feet have already filed a complaint against management. 😂

📸 Which Area Feels More “Hong Kong” for a First Visit?

They both do — but in different ways.

Tsim Sha Tsui gives you:

Hong Kong as a panorama.

Victoria Harbour.

The skyline across the water.

Promenade walks.

Star Ferry crossings.

Nathan Road and Kowloon immediately behind you.

Central gives you:

Hong Kong from inside the city.

Skyscrapers overhead.

Hills behind you.

Trams nearby.

Older streets mixed with modern towers.

Restaurants, bars and neighborhoods spreading west toward Sheung Wan.

One isn’t more authentically Hong Kong than the other.

They’re simply different perspectives on the same city.

🛍️ What About Food and Shopping?

Again, both work.

Tsim Sha Tsui gives you enormous choice across Kowloon, with easy access north toward Jordan, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok.

Central puts you near a huge range of dining options on Hong Kong Island and makes exploring Sheung Wan and surrounding neighborhoods very easy.

If eating is one of your main reasons for coming to Hong Kong — excellent decision, by the way 😂 — I wouldn’t eliminate either location because of food.

You’ll eat well on both sides of the harbour.

🌙 What About at Night?

This is where personal preference matters.

If you love the idea of finishing your day by walking along Victoria Harbour and looking across at Hong Kong Island, Tsim Sha Tsui is hard to beat.

If you’d rather finish the evening around restaurants, bars and the streets of Central or nearby SoHo, Central may suit you better.

Think about where you’d enjoy being at 9pm, not only where attractions are at 10am.

That’s often a better way to choose your hotel base.

🏨 So Where Would I Start Looking for a First Hong Kong Trip?

For a typical first-time sightseeing trip, I’d begin my hotel search in:

Tsim Sha Tsui.

Not because Central is worse.

Far from it.

But TST combines several things particularly well for a first visit:

harbour + skyline + Star Ferry + MTR + Kowloon + easy access to Hong Kong Island.

It gives you a very immediate sense of Hong Kong.

But if your travel style is more:

neighborhoods + restaurants + cafés + nightlife + Hong Kong Island wandering

then I’d seriously consider Central or nearby areas such as Sheung Wan instead.

💰 Compare the Actual Hotels Before Deciding

This is where I would stop debating neighborhoods in the abstract.

Compare:

room price + room size + exact location + MTR distance + recent reviews

for your actual travel dates.

Sometimes the decision becomes obvious once you see the hotels available.

🧭 Bottom Line

For a first-time Hong Kong visitor focused on sightseeing, I’d start by looking at Tsim Sha Tsui.

Choose Central if being based on Hong Kong Island and spending more time exploring its neighborhoods better matches the trip you want.

But don’t obsess over finding the universally “best” neighborhood.

There isn’t one.

Instead ask:

Where would I enjoy starting and ending each day?

Then compare the actual hotels.

Because in Hong Kong:

the exact hotel location can matter more than the neighborhood label.
