Prepare The Essentials

What Every First-Time Visitor Should Do Before Flying to China

By now, you’ve decided how you’d like to travel and where you’d like to go.

Now it’s time to prepare.

The good news? You don’t need months of planning.

Most first-time visitors only need to get a handful of essentials right before boarding the plane. Once those are in place, you can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying China.

1. Check Your Passport and Entry Requirements

Before booking anything else, make sure:

  • Your passport is valid for at least six months.
  • You understand the latest entry requirements for your nationality.
  • You have any required documents ready before departure.

Entry requirements can change, so always confirm the latest information before you fly.

2. Decide How You’ll Stay Connected

Your phone will become one of your most useful travel tools in China.

You’ll use it for:

  • navigation
  • translation
  • ride-hailing
  • train tickets
  • restaurant searches
  • mobile payments

Think about your internet solution before departure.

Many travelers choose an eSIM so they’re connected the moment they land.

3. Set Up Mobile Payments

China is one of the world’s most cashless societies.

While cash is still accepted, you’ll find everyday travel much easier if you can pay with your phone.

Before leaving home, set up:

  • Alipay
  • WeChat Pay (recommended)

Doing this in advance is usually much easier than trying to solve payment issues after you arrive.

4. Install the Essential Apps

The right apps can save you hours of frustration.

Before your trip, install the apps you’ll need while you still have reliable internet and access to your usual app store.

Our recommended list includes:

  • maps
  • translation
  • transportation
  • payments
  • travel planning

5. Understand How You’ll Get Around

China’s high-speed rail network is one of the best in the world.

If you’re traveling independently, spend a little time understanding how train travel works before you leave.

Knowing what to expect makes your first journey much less intimidating.

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Local Experts

One piece of advice that’s often overlooked:

You don’t have to figure everything out yourself.

If you’re considering hiring an English-speaking private guide for part of your trip, get in touch before you fly.

A good local guide isn’t just someone who meets you at an attraction.

They’re also a valuable source of local knowledge while you’re planning.

For example, you can ask:

  • Is my itinerary realistic?
  • Which section of the Great Wall is best for my family?
  • Is my hotel in a convenient location?
  • Should I visit this attraction on a weekday instead?
  • How much time should I allow between places?

Sometimes a five-minute conversation with someone who lives there is far more helpful than spending hours searching online.

If you later decide to book a guided day tour, you’ve already built a relationship with someone who understands your travel style.

The ChinaTravelBUG Approach

At ChinaTravelBUG, we don’t believe travel has to be either completely independent or completely guided.

Many first-time visitors enjoy the best of both.

Plan your own journey.

Travel independently where it makes sense.

Ask local experts when their knowledge can save you time, energy and unnecessary frustration.

It’s an approach we’ve found works remarkably well.

Before You Fly Checklist

Before heading to the airport, make sure you’ve completed these essentials:

✓ Passport and entry requirements checked

✓ Internet solution chosen

✓ Mobile payments set up

✓ Essential apps installed

✓ Transportation understood

✓ Questions answered by a trusted local guide (if needed)

You don’t need to know everything before arriving.

You simply need a good foundation.

Our Recommendation

The more you prepare before leaving home, the more relaxed your first days in China will be.

Set up the essentials.

Stay curious.

Leave room for discovery.

That’s a much better way to experience China than trying to plan every detail months in advance.

Continue Planning Your Trip

You’ve prepared the essentials.

Now it’s time to put everything together.
