Into the Xi’an Muslim Quarter (回民街, Huímín Jiē) we went.
Crowds.
Lights.
Food stalls.
Smoke rising from grills.
People eating everywhere.
This is not the place to arrive after dinner.

Because tonight…
Elaine had a mission.
FIND THE BBQ.
👃 Follow the Crowds. Follow Your Nose.
This is half the fun.
Don’t rush.
Walk.
Look.
Smell.
Every few steps…
something else is cooking.
Something else catches your eye.
Something else makes Dad want to stop.

But Elaine?
Focused.
BBQ.

Keep walking.
Keep smelling.
And eventually…
🔥 FOUND IT!
There!

Elaine had found the BBQ.

Skewers.
Grills.
Spices.
Smoke.
People eating.
Okay…
THIS LOOKS PROMISING.
But finding the BBQ was only the beginning.
Now we needed to investigate.

This is one of Dad’s favorite things about traveling.
Sometimes the food is only half the story.
The other half?
THE PEOPLE MAKING IT.
Elaine went over.
The skewers were being prepared.
Spices ready.
Grill working.
And Elaine?

Look at that smile.
Dad didn’t need to ask whether we’d found the right place.

Now look at these.

Fresh from the grill.
Browned around the edges.
Seasoning clinging to the meat.
Sesame.
Spices.
That BBQ aroma.
Dad could spend another three paragraphs describing them.
But why?
JUST LOOK AT THEM.

This is exactly why Dad loves traveling with a mission.
Sometimes you’re not searching for another attraction.
You’re searching for…
DINNER.
😋 Mission Accomplished. Now EAT.
The hunt is over.
Sit down.
Skewers on the table.
Eat them while they’re hot.
One.
Then another.
Then…

This wasn’t some complicated restaurant Dad researched months before the trip.
Elaine wanted Xi’an BBQ.
We went walking.
We followed the food stalls.
We found the grill.
We met the people making it.
Then we sat down and ate.
THIS IS TRAVEL TOO.

Something cold.
Something fizzy.
Something sweet.
Ours was:

Orange soda.

BBQ skewers on the table.
Cold orange soda beside them.
Busy Xi’an night around us.
Sometimes travel really doesn’t need to be complicated.
BBQ + COLD DRINK + XI’AN NIGHT.
Dad is happy.
Elaine is happy.
Mission accomplished.

Because Dad doesn’t want you to experience Xi’an only through its famous monuments.
Of course…
see the Terracotta Warriors.
Walk the ancient city wall.
Explore the history.
Xi’an deserves all of that.
But when evening comes?
GO WALK.
Walk into the food streets.
Follow the lights.
Follow the crowds.
Follow the smell coming off the grills.
Find something you haven’t eaten before.
Stop.
Look.
Order.
Taste.
And occasionally…
let someone else decide what tonight’s mission will be.

the Muslim Quarter wasn’t simply another Xi’an attraction Dad and Elaine had visited.
