Flying into Hong Kong International Airport but heading straight to Macau? You don’t necessarily need to enter Hong Kong first. There is a direct transfer coach from HKIA’s SkyPier Terminal to Macau—and eligible international visitors can currently get the journey free under Macau’s “Fly you to Macao” promotion.

There’s one instruction worth remembering before anything else:
If you’re using the direct HKIA-to-Macau SkyPier transfer service, do NOT pass through Hong Kong immigration after landing.
That little detail can make the difference between a very easy airport transfer and having to find another way to Macau.
Here’s how the journey works.
Quick Answer: Can I Travel Directly From Hong Kong Airport to Macau?
Yes.
Passengers arriving at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) can transfer directly to Macau using the SkyPier Terminal Transfer Coach without formally entering Hong Kong.
The coach travels from HKIA’s SkyPier Terminal across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) to the HZMB Macao Port.
Even better, the Macao Government Tourism Office is currently running its “Fly you to Macao” promotion, providing eligible international visitors with a free one-way coach ticket from Hong Kong International Airport to Macau.
The promotion is currently scheduled to run until 31 December 2026, subject to availability.
Free tickets are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Who Can Get the Free HKIA-to-Macau Bus Ticket?
The promotion is intended for international visitors to Hong Kong holding valid foreign travel documents.
Residents of the Greater China region are excluded from the offer.
According to the Macao Government Tourism Office, eligible travelers need:
- a valid foreign travel document
- their boarding pass for the flight arriving in Hong Kong
- a completed and signed declaration form
The service provider may additionally request proof of your onward transportation from Macau or your Macau hotel reservation.
Because free seats are limited, I would check availability and reserve your journey with the coach operator before flying rather than assuming you’ll get a seat after landing.
Step 1: Land at Hong Kong International Airport
After your flight arrives at HKIA, follow the airport signs for:
Mainland / Macao
and
Transfer Area E2
This is where things are slightly different from a normal arrival in Hong Kong.
Do NOT go through Hong Kong immigration.
You are transferring through the airport to Macau rather than entering Hong Kong.
Once you’ve passed through Hong Kong immigration, you cannot return to the transfer area to use this SkyPier transfer coach service.
That’s probably the single most important thing to remember.
Step 2: Don’t Collect Your Checked Luggage Yet
This part can feel strange if you’ve never made this type of transfer before.
Normally, after an international flight, we’d instinctively follow everyone toward immigration and baggage reclaim.
Don’t.
If you’ve checked luggage, keep your airline baggage tag receipt with you.
At Transfer Area E2, the staff will arrange for your checked luggage to be transferred to SkyPier Terminal.
You’ll collect it later.
Step 3: Go to Transfer Area E2
Proceed to the SkyPier Terminal Transfer Coach ticketing area at Transfer Area E2 in Terminal 1.
The Macau HK Airport Direct operator currently identifies its counters as 38–40.
Have your documents ready.
For the normal SkyPier transfer coach, passengers should have their same-day arrival flight ticket, e-ticket or boarding pass, valid coach ticket, passport and any visa required for Macau.
For the free 2026 “Fly you to Macao” promotion, you’ll also need to satisfy the promotion’s eligibility requirements and complete the required declaration.
If you have checked luggage, show the staff your baggage tag receipt.
Step 4: Allow Enough Transfer Time
Don’t book a coach departure too close to your flight’s scheduled arrival.
Hong Kong International Airport currently advises passengers with checked luggage to arrive at the E2 SkyPier Transfer Coach ticketing counter at least 60 minutes before the coach’s scheduled departure.
Passengers without checked luggage should arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.
Remember that your aircraft still needs to land, taxi to the gate and let passengers disembark before you can reach E2.
A delayed incoming flight could therefore affect your transfer.
Step 5: Take the Airport Train to SkyPier Terminal
Once your transfer formalities are completed, you’ll continue from the main passenger terminal to SkyPier Terminalusing Hong Kong International Airport’s Automated People Mover.
It’s a short airport train ride.
And you’re still effectively in transfer mode—you haven’t entered Hong Kong.
Step 6: Collect Your Checked Luggage at SkyPier
This is another important point.
If you checked luggage on your flight to Hong Kong, you do not collect it from the normal HKIA arrivals baggage hall.
Airport staff transfer the luggage to SkyPier Terminal after you present your baggage tag at E2.
At SkyPier, follow the signs to the dedicated baggage reclaim area and collect your bags before boarding the coach.
You then take your luggage with you onto the Macau transfer coach.
Step 7: Take the Direct Coach to Macau
From SkyPier Terminal, the coach travels to Macau via the enormous Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
The destination is the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Macao Port, commonly called the HZMB Macao Port.
This is worth understanding before you travel:
The free coach does NOT take you directly to your Macau hotel.
It takes you to the Macao Port.
After arriving in Macau and completing the required arrival formalities, you’ll need onward transportation to your hotel or other destination.
Depending on where you’re staying, that could mean a public bus, taxi, hotel shuttle or another local transport option.
How Long Does Hong Kong Airport to Macau Take?
The road journey across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge itself is relatively quick, but don’t think of this simply as a 45-minute airport transfer.
Your complete journey also includes:
flight arrival → walking to E2 → ticket and document processing → baggage-transfer arrangements → APM to SkyPier → baggage collection → coach boarding → journey across the bridge → Macau arrival formalities → transportation to your hotel.
Give yourself plenty of time, particularly if you’re traveling with children, elderly family members or several pieces of luggage.
Can I Enter Hong Kong First and Come Back for the Macau Bus?
No—not for this particular SkyPier transfer service.
Hong Kong International Airport specifically warns passengers traveling onward to Macau using SkyPier:
Do not pass through Hong Kong immigration or reclaim your baggage in the normal arrivals area.
Passengers who have already completed Hong Kong immigration cannot return to the E2 ticketing counter to use the service.
If you actually want to spend time in Hong Kong before continuing to Macau, that’s a different journey. You would enter Hong Kong normally and later travel to Macau using one of the regular cross-border options.
What If I Arrive in Hong Kong Late at Night?
Check the current coach timetable before booking your flight and transfer.
The SkyPier service operates on a timetable rather than continuously throughout the night, and passengers using the air-to-Macau transfer must travel onward on the same day as their arrival.
Don’t assume that every flight arriving at HKIA will connect conveniently with a Macau coach.
Is the Macau Bus Really FREE in 2026?
For eligible international visitors, yes—the Macao Government Tourism Office’s “Fly you to Macao” promotioncurrently provides free one-way coach tickets from the restricted area of Hong Kong International Airport to Macau.
The current promotion runs through 31 December 2026.
However, there’s an important catch:
Ticket allocation is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis until the quota is exhausted.
So “free until December 31” doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a free seat on December 30.
Check the latest availability and conditions before traveling.
The One Mistake You Really Don’t Want to Make
If you remember only one thing from this guide, make it this:
Landing at HKIA and going directly to Macau? Follow the Mainland/Macao signs to Transfer Area E2 BEFORE Hong Kong immigration.
Don’t follow the normal arrivals crowd through immigration.
Don’t go looking for your suitcase at the normal baggage carousel.
And don’t assume you can come back to E2 after entering Hong Kong.
Once you understand that, the process makes much more sense.
