Planning a Long Winter Trip Across China: Beijing, Xi’an, Chongqing, Zhangjiajie, Guilin & Beyond

A real traveler question answered by the ChinaTravelBUG AI Travel Planner

Planning a long trip across China can quickly become complicated. How many places should you visit? Do you need a tour? Does speaking Mandarin make independent travel easier? And what happens when your trip falls during winter and close to Chinese New Year?

A traveler recently asked this question online.

ChinaTravelBUG AI Travel Planner’s Answer

This trip is very doable independently, especially because one of you speaks Mandarin. The bigger issue isn’t language — it’s routing and winter timing.

You have almost eight weeks available, so I wouldn’t try to find one inexpensive tour covering everything. I’d travel independently between cities by high-speed rail/flight, then book occasional English- or Cantonese-speaking day tours/guides where they genuinely add value. That keeps costs down and gives you much more freedom. China’s rail network is particularly useful for multi-city independent trips.

I’d organize the trip roughly like this

Beijing → Xi’an → Chongqing → Zhangjiajie → Guilin → Guangzhou → Shenzhen → Hong Kong → Macau

That creates a fairly logical north-to-south journey rather than bouncing around China.

The main thing I’d reconsider is when you visit each region. Beijing and Xi’an in December/January can be cold, but winter can also mean a very different atmosphere and fewer peak-season crowds. Zhangjiajie and Guilin are more weather-sensitive, so I’d keep some flexibility rather than locking every day months ahead.

And don’t rush simply because you have lots of time. Beijing deserves around 4–5 full days and Xi’an 3–4; treating Xi’an as just a Terracotta Warriors stop is a common mistake. With nearly eight weeks, use the extra time for slower neighborhood exploration, food, parks and rest rather than adding still more cities.

Language shouldn’t worry you too much. Even travelers who speak no Mandarin can travel independently with translation/navigation apps and properly prepared mobile payments. Since one of you speaks Mandarin, you already have a substantial advantage. Not reading Chinese is manageable with camera translation.

One important date, though: Chinese New Year falls on February 6, 2027, just after your proposed trip ends. The travel rush begins before the holiday, so your final week deserves careful planning. I’d avoid leaving important long-distance transport arrangements until the last minute.

My next decision would therefore be how long you actually want to travel. Having Dec 11–Feb 5 available doesn’t necessarily mean you should travel for all eight weeks.

If you tell me whether you’re thinking 3–4 weeks, 5–6 weeks, or the entire period, I can suggest a comfortable number of nights in each of those nine destinations.

Planning Your Own China Trip?

Your trip probably won’t look exactly like this one — and that’s the point.

Some travelers want China’s great historical cities. Others care more about food, mountains, photography, everyday life or traveling slowly. The number of days you have is only part of the equation.

This FREE ChinaTravelBUG AI Travel Planner is designed to help you think through those decisions — not simply generate another generic itinerary.

Ask it about:

  • Which cities make sense for your interests
  • Whether your itinerary is too rushed
  • How many nights to spend in each destination
  • Whether to travel independently, use private guides or combine both
  • How to organize your route more efficiently
  • Practical questions about trains, payments, apps and getting around China

Have a China travel question? Ask the ChinaTravelBUG AI Travel Planner and start with the decision you’re struggling with most.
