For a two-week trip in December, I’d simplify this itinerary. Beijing → Xi’an → Chengdu → Chongqing → Hong Kong → Shanghai is technically possible, but six major cities in roughly 13 nights means too much of the holiday will be spent checking out, reaching stations/airports, traveling, and checking in again.
The route has good variety, but I think you’ll enjoy China more by dropping at least one city, preferably two. For a first trip, 3–4 destinations in two weeks is usually a much better balance.
What’s Working
Beijing and Xi’an are excellent choices in December. Beijing gives you imperial China—the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, hutongs and Great Wall—while Xi’an takes the story back toward China’s early imperial beginnings and the Terracotta Army.
Chengdu adds something genuinely different. It isn’t just pandas. Tea houses, Sichuan food and People’s Park give you a much more relaxed look at everyday Chinese life.
Shanghai then provides a strong contrast: historic international Shanghai alongside the extraordinary modern city.
What I’d Improve
The weak point is Chengdu + Chongqing + Hong Kong + Shanghai all squeezed into the second half.
I’d choose Chengdu or Chongqing, rather than automatically doing both. They’re geographically close, but you’re still paying the price of another hotel change for a short stay.
Hong Kong also creates a substantial southward detour before you head northeast again to Shanghai. The map makes the problem quite visible.
Recommended Changes
For approximately 13 nights, I’d favor:
Beijing — 4 nights
Xi’an — 3 nights
Chengdu — 3 nights
Shanghai — 3 nights
That’s a wonderfully varied first journey: imperial China → ancient China → Sichuan food and everyday life → modern China. It also leaves enough time to actually experience each place rather than continually preparing for the next train or flight.
If Hong Kong is especially important to you, I’d keep it—but then I’d probably remove both Chengdu or Shanghai rather than squeezing everything in.
One December advantage: this isn’t peak domestic tourist season in northern China, although Beijing and Xi’an can be very cold, especially the Great Wall. The trade-off is potentially fewer crowds than during China’s major holiday periods.
One Helpful Insight
Don’t count a travel day as a sightseeing day. Even a relatively quick high-speed-rail journey consumes considerably more time once you include packing, hotel checkout, getting to the station, security, boarding and reaching the next hotel.
That’s why removing just one stop can make a surprisingly large improvement to a two-week trip.
