Why Do People in China Drink So Much Hot Water?

You may notice it in your hotel, on a train, in a restaurant — or simply when someone offers you a drink.

Hot water. Just hot water.

For many international travelers, the obvious question is:

Why?

🥟 The Quick Bite

Drinking hot or warm water (热水, rèshuǐ) is a familiar everyday habit in China.

For many people, warm water simply feels comfortable, normal and good for the body — especially compared with drinking very cold water.

It is also a habit reinforced over generations by ideas about health and by everyday access to boiled water.

🌍 If You’re Trying to Place It…

Think about how a cup of tea or another warm drink can feel comforting — especially when you’re cold, tired or unwell.

Now remove the tea.

The warm water itself can be the comforting drink.

🫖 Why Did the Habit Become So Common?

There isn’t one single explanation.

Chinese traditions have long associated warmth with bodily comfort and health. In the 20th century, public-health campaigns also encouraged people to drink boiled water because boiling made water safer to drink.

Over time, drinking warm or hot water became deeply ordinary.

That helps explain something travelers still notice today: hot-water dispensers are common in places such as railway stations and trains.

🧊 What About Cold Water?

You can certainly drink cold water in China.

But don’t be surprised if someone — particularly an older person — suggests warm water instead.

And if you’re feeling unwell, you may even hear:

多喝热水 (duō hē rèshuǐ)
“Drink more hot water.”

It can sound almost comically simple.

But often it’s also a small expression of care.

🥟 One Last Bite

When someone in China hands you a cup of plain warm water, don’t think:

“They forgot the tea.” 😂

The hot water may be exactly what they intended to give you.

Sometimes one of China’s most noticeable everyday habits is also one of its simplest:

a cup of water — served warm.

See China. Understand It Better.
