You walk past an apartment compound in China and see a wall of little lockers.
Then another.
Nearby, there may be shelves piled with parcels and people constantly arriving to collect them.
“Does everybody in this building shop online? 😂”
Quite a lot of them probably do.
🥟 The Quick Bite
China has an enormous express-delivery (快递, kuàidì) system.
Instead of every parcel always being handed directly to someone at their apartment door, deliveries may be left at a parcel locker (快递柜, kuàidìguì) or a neighborhood collection point.
The customer gets a notification and collects it later.
🌍 If You’re Trying to Place It…
Think of an Amazon Locker or parcel collection point.
Now imagine that kind of system becoming a very ordinary part of residential life because enormous numbers of parcels are moving through Chinese cities every day.
That’s much closer to what you’re seeing.
📦 Why Not Just Deliver Everything to the Door?
Apartment compounds can contain hundreds or even thousands of residents.
Delivering every parcel individually to every apartment takes time.
A locker or collection point allows a courier to leave multiple parcels in one location while residents collect them when convenient.
It also means you don’t necessarily need to be home when the courier arrives.
👀 Useful Chinese Words
Once you recognize these, you’ll start seeing them everywhere:
快递 (kuàidì) — express delivery / parcel
快递柜 (kuàidìguì) — parcel locker
取件 (qǔjiàn) — collect a parcel
取件码 (qǔjiànmǎ) — collection code
Your phone may receive a 取件码, which you use to retrieve the parcel.
🏪 And What Is a 菜鸟驿站?
You may also see signs saying:
菜鸟驿站 (Càiniǎo Yìzhàn)
These are Cainiao neighborhood parcel-service/collection points.
Instead of opening a locker, you may go inside or to a collection area and retrieve your parcel there.
So don’t assume every mountain of packages you see outside a residential area has been abandoned. 😂
There’s probably a system behind it.

Those parcel lockers reveal another little piece of everyday China:
online shopping doesn’t end when you press “Buy.”
Behind that button is an enormous network of:
couriers + phones + collection codes + lockers + neighborhood pickup points.
And suddenly that wall of mysterious little doors beside the apartment block makes perfect sense.
