Why Isn’t There Toilet Paper in Some Public Toilets in China?

You find a public toilet in China.

Good.

You find an empty stall.

Even better.

Then you look beside the toilet.

No toilet paper. 😳

Now what?

🥟 The Quick Bite

Don’t assume every public toilet in China will provide toilet paper inside the stall.

Many modern toilets do.

Some have a shared toilet-paper dispenser outside the stalls.

And some may have none available at all.

So one of the simplest China travel habits is:

carry a small packet of tissues.

🌍 If You’re Trying to Place It…

Think of travelling somewhere where you learn very quickly:

“This is one thing I should carry myself rather than assume will be provided.”

In China, tissues can become that item.

Not exciting.

Until you need them. 😂

👀 Check Before You Enter the Stall

This is the important bit.

Look around the washroom entrance or sink area first.

There may be one large shared dispenser where you’re expected to take the paper you need before entering the stall.

Useful Chinese:

卫生纸 (wèishēngzhǐ) — toilet paper

纸巾 (zhǐjīn) — tissue

厕所 (cèsuǒ) — toilet

卫生间 (wèishēngjiān) — restroom

🎒 Dad’s Practical Bite

Put a small packet of tissues in your day bag on Day One.

Then forget about it until you need it.

Dad would rather carry tissues around China for three weeks and never use them than discover their importance thirty seconds too late. 😂

And hand sanitizer is another useful backup because public-restroom facilities vary.

🤔 Does This Mean Chinese Toilets Are Bad?

No.

China has everything from very basic public toilets to extremely modern facilities.

The useful travel lesson is simply not to assume that every restroom will be equipped exactly like the ones you’re familiar with.

Check.

Adapt.

Carry tissues.

Problem solved.

🥟 One Last Bite

There are many complicated things you can learn before travelling to China.

This isn’t one of them.

Tissues in bag. Always.

It’s probably one of the smallest pieces of China travel preparation you’ll ever make.

And occasionally…

one of the most appreciated. 😂

See China. Understand It Better.
