You sit down for dinner in China.
Then the food starts arriving.
One dish.
Another dish.
Another.
Everything goes into the middle of the table.
And you wonder:
“Er… which one is mine? 😂”
🥟 The Quick Bite
Quite often:
none of them — and all of them.
At many Chinese group meals, several dishes are ordered for the whole table to share, rather than everyone ordering one individual main course.
Each person usually has their own small bowl or plate, while everyone eats from the shared dishes in the center.
🌍 If You’re Trying to Place It…
Think:
family-style dining.
Instead of:
“I ordered the chicken, you ordered the fish.”
the table orders:
chicken + fish + vegetables + tofu + soup…
and everyone gets to try a little of everything.
🥢 How Am I Supposed to Take the Food?
If the restaurant provides serving chopsticks (公筷, gōngkuài) or a serving spoon, use them to move food from the shared dish to your own bowl or plate.
Useful Chinese:
公筷 (gōngkuài) — serving / communal chopsticks
公勺 (gōngsháo) — serving spoon
碗 (wǎn) — bowl
Actual practice varies between restaurants, families and situations, so don’t panic about memorizing a giant rulebook.
Watch what your table is doing.
👀 Why Share?
There’s a lovely practical advantage.
Sharing lets everybody taste many dishes in one meal.
Instead of spending dinner staring jealously at Dad’s much better order across the table… 😂
you can simply try some.
And the meal itself becomes something the group experiences together.
🫣 Am I Supposed to Try Everything?
No.
Take small amounts of dishes you want to try.
If you have allergies, dietary restrictions or simply don’t want something, you don’t need to eat it just because it’s on the table.
And if you’re unsure what to do:
follow your host or the people you’re eating with.
🥟 One Last Bite
When the first six dishes arrive and nobody tells you which one belongs to you, don’t worry.
That’s probably because you’re asking the wrong question.
Not:
“Which dish is mine?”
but:
“Which one shall I try first?” 😂
