One of our favorite Beijing things to do—especially if you’re a souveneur or postcard collector—is visiting the China Post flagship store along Qianmen. You must visit this store for the China stamps too!
Unlike most places, it’s open late into the evening, and inside you’ll find adorable Beijing-themed souvenirs, collectible stamps, and opera-face magnets. It’s the kind of stop that mixes nostalgia with fun, making it one of the more low-key yet meaningful Beijing attractions.
Elaine picked a magnet to remember the opera moment earlier that evening. “Let’s put this on the fridge,” she said. And just like that, a memory was sealed.
Menting Beef Puff – Elaine’s Absolute Favorite Hot Snack in Beijing
No stroll through Beijing China market streets is complete without a snack. At a small storefront glowing with warm yellow light, we found the Menting Beef Puff (门钉牛肉饼)—crispy on the outside, savory and juicy on the inside.
Elaine picked the golden shredded beef flavor. The first bite gave a satisfying crunch, followed by rich, peppery meat wrapped in hundreds of flaky pastry layers. She declared it the “best Beijing snack.”

The Lux Shine 京剧文化馆 – Living Opera History
One of the most memorable moments of our Beijing China travel was visiting the Lux Shine Beijing Opera House, tucked along Qianmen Street.
This is no ordinary theater. It’s part cultural museum, part interactive exhibit, and fully immersive for those curious about traditional Chinese opera—one of the most iconic aspects of famous places in Beijing.
Elaine had dreamed of trying on a real opera headpiece. Here, that dream came true. She posed, laughed, and learned, all in one place. For families, it’s one of the Beijing attractions top 10 in our book.
A Seat of History—And a Laugh
As we continued our Beijing sightseeing, we stumbled across a bronze statue of a Qing Dynasty scholar bowing before a chair. Naturally, I sat. Elaine took a photo, giggling.

Dashilan runs perpendicular to Qianmen, just behind Zhengyangmen Gate (正阳门). It’s a short walk and absolutely worth the turn.
