Internet in China Made Easy

eSIM, SIM Card or Roaming? A First-Time Visitor’s Guide (2026)

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Quick Answer

For most first-time visitors, a travel eSIM is the easiest option.

It works as soon as you land, usually lets you access Google, Gmail and WhatsApp without extra setup, and doesn’t require a Chinese phone number.

Our recommendation:

  • ✅ Best for most travellers: Travel eSIM
  • ✅ Best for short trips: International roaming
  • ✅ Best for long stays: Chinese SIM card

Which Option Is Best?

Option 1 — Travel eSIM ⭐ Recommended

A travel eSIM lets you connect to the internet as soon as your plane lands.

It’s ideal if you want to use:

  • Google Maps
  • Gmail
  • WhatsApp
  • Instagram
  • Facebook

without worrying about extra setup.

For most tourists, this is the simplest choice.

Option 2 — International Roaming

Using your home mobile provider is the easiest option if you’re visiting China for just a few days.

Advantages:

  • Keep your existing phone number.
  • No new SIM card needed.
  • Usually allows access to your usual apps.

The downside is cost, as roaming can be expensive.

Option 3 — Chinese SIM Card

A local SIM card is usually the cheapest option for longer trips.

However:

  • You’ll need your passport.
  • You’ll receive a Chinese phone number.
  • Some international apps may not be directly accessible without additional solutions.

Unless you’re staying for several weeks or months, most visitors will find a travel eSIM more convenient.

Common Mistakes

❌ Buying nothing before departure

Don’t assume you’ll have airport Wi-Fi or be able to download everything after landing.

❌ Downloading apps after arriving

Install everything you need before your flight, including:

  • Alipay
  • WeChat
  • Didi
  • Trip.com
  • Google Maps offline maps

❌ Choosing a local SIM without understanding the differences

A Chinese SIM card is excellent for long-term stays, but it isn’t always the easiest choice for short holidays.

CTB Experience

For our recent China trips, we found that having internet access from the moment we landed made everything easier.

We could contact our hotel, book a Didi, navigate to the correct exit and pay for food without searching for Wi-Fi.

Having reliable internet from the first minute in China removes a surprising amount of travel stress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy an eSIM before travelling?

Yes. Buying and activating it before departure means you’ll be connected almost immediately after landing.

Will my phone work with an eSIM?

Most newer iPhones, Google Pixel phones and many recent Android devices support eSIM. Check your phone’s specifications before purchasing.

Do I need a VPN?

If you’re using a travel eSIM or international roaming, many visitors can access their usual apps without additional setup. If you plan to use a Chinese SIM card, research your options before travelling, as your experience may differ.

Can I use hotel Wi-Fi?

Yes, but don’t rely on it for your first few hours in China. Having your own mobile data is much more convenient.

CTB Tip

💡 Download everything before you leave home.

Install your payment apps, maps, translation tools and offline travel documents while you still have fast, familiar internet. It saves time and avoids unnecessary stress after a long flight.
