For most international travellers planning their first China vacation, Xi’an (西安) is already one of the most important China places to visit.
Most visitors arrive through Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (西安咸阳国际机场) before exploring the famous Xi’an tourist attractions:
- Xi’an Terracotta Warriors (秦始皇兵马俑)
- Xi’an City Wall (西安城墙)
- Xi’an Muslim Quarter (回民街)
- Xi’an Museum (西安博物院)
- Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔)
These are all amazing places and should be part of any first-time Xi’an travel itinerary.
But after exploring the usual Xi’an attractions, look at a Xi’an China map.
You may notice something interesting.
Xi’an was not an isolated ancient capital.
It sits in the middle of a region where thousands of years of Chinese civilisation unfolded.
Around Xi’an are many lesser-known but important China historical places.
Baoji (宝鸡) reveals the world before Qin Shi Huang.
Xianyang (咸阳), just west of Xi’an, tells the story of Qin unification.
And Hancheng (韩城) preserves the memory of the man who recorded China’s past — Sima Qian (司马迁).
Getting From Xi’an to Hancheng by Train
Travelling from Xi’an to Hancheng is much easier than many foreign visitors expect.
China’s railway network makes exploring beyond major cities convenient, safe, and affordable.
Route:

Hancheng Railway Station (韩城站)
⏱ Journey time:
Around 2 to 2.5 hours
🎫 Ticket:
Very affordable compared with many countries
Although there is currently no high-speed rail (高铁 gāotiě) connection to Hancheng, the normal train journey is comfortable and straightforward.
For travellers already staying in a Xi’an hotel, Hancheng can easily become a short overnight historical journey.
Should You Visit Hancheng as a Day Trip or Stay Overnight?
Technically, Hancheng can be visited as a long day trip from Xi’an.
But Elaine and I recommend staying at least one night.
Why?
Because Hancheng is not a place to rush.
It is a place to slowly experience.
Spend time walking through:
- Hancheng Ancient City (韩城古城)
- Sima Qian Temple (司马迁祠)
- Wen Temple / Confucius Temple (文庙)
- Dayu Temple (大禹庙)
- Shiji Cultural exhibitions (史记文化)
Enjoy the quieter streets after day visitors leave.
Slow down.
Let the city tell its story.
Why Add Hancheng to Your Xi’an Travel Plan?
Many travellers ask:
“How many days should I spend in Xi’an?”
My answer changed after travelling deeper with Elaine.
If you only have a few days, enjoy the famous Xi’an things to do.
They are famous for a reason.
But if you have extra time and want to understand China beyond sightseeing, consider travelling outside Xi’an.
Because Xi’an is not only a destination.
It is a gateway into the Chinese civilisation timeline.

Many people travel to China to see famous landmarks.
The Great Wall.

But sometimes the places you have never heard of before your trip become the places you remember the most.
