Bag security checks are a normal part of metro travel in many Chinese cities.
For example, Beijing requires passengers to accept security checks before entering subway stations, while Shanghai’s current rules require security screening of passengers and their luggage.
The purpose is straightforward:

For an ordinary metro trip, you generally put your bag through the scanner and continue through the checkpoint.
Depending on the city and circumstances, passengers themselves may also be screened using security gates, metal detectors or other checks.
