Why Do Some People in China Walk Backwards in Parks?

You’re walking through a Chinese park when someone approaches you.

Except they’re facing the wrong way.

They’re walking backwards.

Then another person passes doing exactly the same thing.

Why? 😂

🥟 The Quick Bite

Backward walking 倒走 (dàozǒu) is an exercise you may see, particularly among middle-aged and older people in Chinese parks.

People practice it for fitness, balance and because some believe it exercises the body differently from ordinary forward walking.

It isn’t a strange traffic rule.

They’re exercising.

🌍 If You’re Trying to Place It…

Think of the unusual exercises you sometimes see people doing at a gym — walking sideways, using resistance bands or deliberately changing their normal movements.

Same basic idea.

Except in China, the park may be the gym.

👀 Why Walk Backwards?

Walking backwards changes the way your muscles and balance work compared with normal walking.

Research has investigated backward walking as a form of exercise and rehabilitation, including possible benefits for balance and lower-body function.

But that doesn’t mean every health claim you may hear about it is scientifically proven.

For many people you see in the park, the explanation is much simpler:

it’s part of their regular exercise routine.

⚠️ Should I Try It Too?

You can — but watch where you’re going. 😂

Backward walking obviously makes it harder to see obstacles, other people, bicycles or uneven ground behind you.

If you want to try it, choose a clear, safe area rather than copying someone beside a busy path.

🥟 One Last Bite

The first time you see someone walking backwards through a Chinese park, it can look wonderfully odd.

Then you notice the stretching, tai chi, dancing and other exercises happening nearby.

Suddenly it makes more sense.

You haven’t found someone who forgot which direction they were going.

You’ve found another way the park becomes an outdoor gym.

See China. Understand It Better.
