For a long China trip, I’d plan the structure firmly but the days loosely. The biggest mistake is booking every day before you arrive. China’s distances, large attractions, walking and hotel changes can make an itinerary that looks reasonable on paper surprisingly tiring.
My approach would be:
- Choose destinations by interest, not fame. Decide what you most want from the trip—history, food, landscapes, modern China, everyday life—then choose cities that serve those interests.
- Stay longer in fewer places. On a long trip, I’d generally prefer 4 nights somewhere interesting over two rushed 2-night stops. Every hotel change consumes more of a day than people expect.
- Book the backbone first: international flights, your first accommodation, important intercity transport, and anything requiring advance reservations. Leave ordinary meals and much of the local sightseeing flexible.
- Treat transfer days as transfer days. A high-speed train may only take three hours, but getting to the station, security, waiting, arrival and hotel check-in all use energy.
- Plan one main experience per day, perhaps with a second easy activity nearby. I’d deliberately leave some afternoons or evenings open rather than filling every available hour.
- Build in occasional “nothing days.” Laundry, sleeping late, wandering a neighborhood, sitting in a park or discovering a restaurant you want to return to aren’t wasted time. On a long journey, they are part of what makes it enjoyable.
One thing I’ve learned about China is that some of the most memorable experiences aren’t necessarily attractions: morning parks, breakfast shops, metro journeys, neighborhood walks and simply watching everyday life. A little unplanned time gives those experiences room to happen.
So I’d think of a long itinerary as anchors + breathing space, rather than a long checklist. If you’re wondering whether to add one more destination, I’d usually add another night somewhere you already want to understand better instead.
