What Are the Best Two Day Trips From Shanghai? Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing or Somewhere Else? — AI Travel Planner Answers

With China’s high-speed rail network, Shanghai (上海, Shànghǎi) makes an excellent base for exploring several nearby cities.

But if you have time for only two day trips, which should you choose: Suzhou (苏州, Sūzhōu), Hangzhou (杭州, Hángzhōu), Nanjing (南京, Nánjīng), Shaoxing (绍兴, Shàoxīng) or Wuxi (无锡, Wúxī)?

AI Travel Planner Answer

For two day trips from Shanghai, I’d choose Suzhou + Hangzhou.

They complement each other very well rather than giving you two versions of the same place:

  • Suzhou — my first choice. Go for the classical gardens, canals and traditional Jiangnan architecture. It gives you a much more intimate, old-China atmosphere than Shanghai. I’d concentrate on one major garden, such as the Humble Administrator’s Garden, plus a historic canal neighborhood rather than racing around every attraction.
  • Hangzhou — my second choice. West Lake is the obvious attraction, but I’d combine it with the Longjing tea-growing area if time allows. That gives you lake scenery, green hills and tea culture—a very different day from Suzhou.
  • Nanjing — excellent, but better overnight. Of your choices, this is the one I’d save for when you can give it more time. Its strength is the combination of Ming history, Republican-era history, museums and Purple Mountain rather than one compact day-trip attraction.
  • Shaoxing — my alternative pick. Choose this instead of Suzhou if you particularly enjoy literature, historic lanes, canals and a less obvious destination. It has more of a lived-in historic-city feeling.
  • Wuxi — pleasant, but I wouldn’t choose it ahead of Suzhou or Hangzhou for only two available days.
  • Gexian Village — I’d skip it from Shanghai. The travel involved makes much less sense for a day trip when several rewarding destinations are much closer.

One other possibility is Zhujiajiao. It’s much closer to Shanghai and useful if you want a relaxed half/full day in a water town without dealing with an intercity trip. But if you’re already visiting Suzhou, I wouldn’t prioritize both—the experience overlaps somewhat.

So my ranking would be:

1. Suzhou
2. Hangzhou
3. Nanjing (preferably overnight)
4. Shaoxing
5. Wuxi
6. Gexian Village

If these are literally two separate day trips while sleeping in Shanghai both nightsSuzhou + Hangzhou is the combination I’d book. It gives you the strongest contrast: classical Jiangnan China one day, lake-and-tea country the next.
