Late October or November for Beijing? And Should You Add Xi’an on a 6–7 Day Trip? — AI Travel Planner Answers

Avoiding Golden Week (黄金周, Huángjīn Zhōu) can make an enormous difference to a first visit to Beijing (北京, Běijīng).

But if you postpone until later in autumn, should you choose late October or November? And with only six or seven days in China, is there enough time to add Xi’an (西安, Xī’ān)?

The Traveler’s Question

Hello everyone!

I recently post something about going to Beijing during the golden week and I’m glad I didn’t buy my tickets 😅

SO, I’m thinking about postpone my holidays week to to end of October or November! Do you have any advice about the period to choose? My goal is to spend 6 or 7 days in China; 4 in Beijing at least and potentially 1 other city! (I’ve seen a lot of posts about Xi’an)

Yes — postponing is a good decision. For this particular trip, I’d choose late October over late November.

Beijing is especially pleasant after the October 1–7 Golden Week rush: cooler, drier weather, autumn colors, and generally much better conditions for long days outside at the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Summer Palace. Historical climate averages are around 19°C/8°C (66°F/46°F) in October, compared with roughly 10°C/0°C (50°F/32°F) in November. (China Discovery)

My choice: roughly October 20 – November 5

That gives you the nicest compromise. You are well beyond Golden Week, but Beijing hasn’t fully moved into its colder, more wintry feel. Late October can also bring beautiful foliage around Beijing and the Great Wall. (China Discovery)

Early November is still perfectly reasonable if your dates work better. I would simply favor early November rather than late November, when temperatures can approach freezing and daylight becomes noticeably shorter. (China Discovery)

And about Xi’an…

With only 6–7 days, don’t add a city simply because you feel you should. Beijing genuinely deserves four or five full days. Its major sights are enormous and spread out, and rushing through them is one of the easiest ways to spoil a short first trip.

If you have 7 days, however, Beijing + Xi’an is the combination I’d choose: approximately 4 days Beijing + 3 days Xi’an. Xi’an isn’t just an extra city for the Terracotta Army. Beijing introduces imperial and modern China; Xi’an takes you much further back toward the beginnings of unified imperial China. Together they tell a surprisingly coherent story.

If you have only 6 days including arrival and departure, I’d seriously consider staying entirely in Beijing rather than losing precious time changing hotels and cities.

So my ranking would be:

7 days → Beijing + Xi’an
6 days → Beijing only, unless Xi’an is a major personal priority

What Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Beijing?

Useful for comparing the seasonal trade-offs before you commit to your dates.

If you tell me whether your 6–7 days includes the international arrival and departure days, I can tell you whether I’d personally keep Xi’an or drop it.
