Why Do People Exercise Together in Chinese Parks?

Visit a park in China early in the morning and you may find it already busy.

Someone is practicing tai chi. A group is moving together to music. Others are stretching, walking backwards or doing exercises you may not recognize.

Why does so much exercise happen in public?

🥟 The Quick Bite

For many people in China, especially older adults, parks and public spaces are everyday places for exercise and social life.

They’re open, convenient and usually free.

And exercising outside doesn’t necessarily mean exercising alone.

🌍 If You’re Trying to Place It…

Think of a neighborhood gym + community center + local park sharing the same outdoor space.

Except nobody needs to walk through a reception desk first.

You simply turn up.

🌳 Why the Park?

Chinese urban parks can be much more than places for scenery.

In the morning and evening, they may become active community spaces where people walk, stretch, practice tai chi (太极拳, tàijíquán), dance, exercise and meet friends.

For retirees especially, that regular routine can provide both physical activity and social contact.

So the person you see exercising beside the lake may also be meeting the same people they see there most mornings.

👀 Look a Little Closer

Don’t expect everyone to be doing the same thing.

Walk through a large park and you might pass several little worlds within a few hundred meters:

a tai chi group here,

people stretching over there,

someone practicing alone under a tree,

and another group chatting after they’ve finished.

The park isn’t hosting one organized fitness event.

People are using the public space in their own ways.

🥟 One Last Bite

If a Chinese park seems unusually lively at 7am, you haven’t necessarily arrived during a special event.

You may simply be seeing the park doing one of its everyday jobs:

giving the neighborhood somewhere to move, meet and start the day together.

See China. Understand It Better.
