According to the licensed Beijing guides we work with, many visitors try to squeeze too much into too little time. The result is a rushed holiday spent more on buses, taxis and the 北京地铁 (Běijīng Dìtiě) than actually enjoying the city.

“How many days should I spend in Beijing?”
There’s no single answer.

Is Three Days Enough?
Three days can work if your goal is to see Beijing’s highlights.
A typical three-day itinerary might include:
Day One

- 景山公园 (Jǐngshān Gōngyuán)
Day Two
- 慕田峪长城 (Mùtiányù Chángchéng)
- Return to the city for dinner.
Day Three

- 什刹海 (Shíchàhǎi)
You’ll leave having seen Beijing’s greatest icons—but with little time to slow down.
Why Do Guides Recommend Four or Five Days?
“Because Beijing is much more than its landmarks.”
An extra day allows you to:
- Wander a 胡同 (Hútòng) without rushing.
- Visit 雍和宫 (Yōnghégōng) — Lama Temple.
- Explore 国家博物馆 (Guójiā Bówùguǎn) — National Museum of China.
- Spend an afternoon in 颐和园 (Yíhéyuán) — Summer Palace.
- Enjoy a relaxed evening instead of packing in one more attraction.
It’s often these quieter moments that visitors remember most.
Should I Visit the Great Wall on a Separate Day?
According to our guide:
“Definitely.”
Although the Wall looks close on a map, travelling to 慕田峪 (Mùtiányù) or 八达岭 (Bādálǐng) usually takes much of the day.
Trying to combine it with the Forbidden City or the Summer Palace often leads to disappointment.
Treat the Great Wall as a full-day experience.
Is a Week Too Long?
Not at all.
With six or seven days you can comfortably add:
- 圆明园 (Yuánmíngyuán) — Old Summer Palace.
- 北海公园 (Běihǎi Gōngyuán).
- 中国国家博物馆 (Zhōngguó Guójiā Bówùguǎn).
- 798艺术区 (Qījiǔbā Yìshù Qū) — 798 Art District.
- Less-visited hutongs.
- Local cafés and neighbourhood markets.
You’ll also have flexibility if the weather changes or you simply feel like taking things more slowly.
What’s the Biggest Planning Mistake?

“Thinking Beijing is smaller than it is.”
Many visitors see attractions clustered on a map and assume they’re only minutes apart.
In reality, Beijing covers more than 16,000 square kilometres.
Even short journeys can take longer than expected because of traffic or security checks.
Always allow extra time.
Which Attractions Need the Most Time?
Our guide suggests allowing at least:
- 故宫 (Gùgōng) — Half a day.
- 颐和园 (Yíhéyuán) — Half a day.
- 慕田峪长城 (Mùtiányù Chángchéng) — Full day.
- 国家博物馆 (Guójiā Bówùguǎn) — Half to full day.
- 天坛 (Tiāntán) — Around three hours.
Trying to rush through them usually means missing the details that make each place special.
What If It’s My First Trip to China?
Our guide recommends making Beijing your starting point.

Because you’ll have time to adjust to:
- Mobile payments such as 微信支付 (Wēixìn Zhīfù) and 支付宝 (Zhīfùbǎo).
- The transport system.
