One thing I’d especially encourage for first-time visitors is leaving some time away from the headline sights. A morning in a neighborhood park, breakfast somewhere local or simply riding the metro and walking around a residential neighborhood can tell you surprisingly much about China today.
The one question I’d ask them before recommending specific places is: How many days are you and your husband thinking of spending in China?
