Should you keep your home SIM active? Do you need a Chinese SIM? Will Alipay (支付宝, Zhīfùbǎo) and WeChat Pay (微信支付, Wēixìn Zhīfù) still work if your internet comes from another eSIM?

The easiest way to understand the setup is to separate your phone number from your internet connection.
Your Vodafone number can remain active while another eSIM provides the data connection used by Alipay, WeChat, maps, translation and other travel apps.
You therefore don’t need to replace your UK number with a Chinese number simply to make mobile payments.
For most first-time travelers with a compatible dual-SIM phone, the practical setup is:
UK SIM ON → Vodafone data roaming OFF → travel eSIM used for mobile data.
Before flying, also check that Alipay and WeChat Pay are already logged in and that your international cards have been added successfully.
One Setting Worth Checking Carefully
When you install the travel eSIM, make sure your phone is actually configured to use it for mobile data.
At the same time, prevent your Vodafone line from unexpectedly switching back to expensive roaming data.
