You’re walking through China.
A sign appears.
Four Chinese characters.
No English translation.
You stop.
Look again.
“Okay… what does THAT say? 😳”
For international travelers who don’t read Chinese, this can happen many times a day.
At a restaurant.
At a metro station.
Outside a toilet.
At a temple.
Sometimes the sign is merely interesting.
Sometimes…
you really need to know what it says. 😂
🥟 The Quick Bite
Mainland China predominantly uses Simplified Chinese characters (简体字, jiǎntǐzì).
You definitely don’t need to learn Chinese before travelling.
But recognizing even a handful of common characters can make everyday China feel considerably easier to navigate.
You don’t need to read the whole sentence.
Sometimes one character gives you the clue you need.
🌍 If You’re Trying to Place It…
Imagine travelling somewhere whose alphabet you can’t read.
At first:
everything looks equally unfamiliar.
Then you learn one symbol means:
EXIT.
Another means:
TOILET.
Another means:
STATION.
Suddenly the wall of writing starts breaking into useful little pieces.
👀 Five Characters Worth Recognizing
Start with:
出 (chū) — out
You’ll see it in:
出口 (chūkǒu) — exit
Then:
入 (rù) — enter
入口 (rùkǒu) — entrance
At railway and metro stations:
站 (zhàn) — station
And two extremely useful characters when nature calls:
男 (nán) — male
女 (nǚ) — female
Five characters won’t teach you Chinese.
But they may help you find your train — or the correct toilet. 😂
🚫 Another Useful One: 禁
禁 (jìn) carries the idea of prohibiting or forbidding.
You’ll often encounter:
禁止 (jìnzhǐ) — prohibited / forbidden
For example:
禁止吸烟 (jìnzhǐ xīyān)
No smoking
禁止拍照 (jìnzhǐ pāizhào)
No photography
You don’t need to understand every character.
If you recognize 禁止, that’s already your clue:
stop and check before doing something.
📱 Let Your Phone Read the Rest
When the sign matters, use a translation app’s camera function.
Point your phone at the Chinese text and translate it.
This can be extremely useful for:
menus + notices + instructions + shop signs + ticket machines.
But automatic translation isn’t perfect.
Historical inscriptions, names, unusual terminology and stylized calligraphy (书法, shūfǎ) can be much harder.
If something is important, translate it and check the context.
You can also ask:
这是什么意思？(Zhè shì shénme yìsi?)
“What does this mean?”
🏯 Old China Can Be Harder to Read
At historic sites, Chinese writing becomes another adventure.
You may encounter:
匾额 (biǎné) — inscribed plaques
对联 (duìlián) — paired couplets
碑 (bēi) — inscribed stone steles
and different styles of calligraphy.
Now the writing isn’t simply helping you find:
EXIT.
It may be telling you the name, history or meaning of the place you’re standing in.

And Chinese writing opens one enormous rabbit hole.
Travel back to Anyang (安阳, Ānyáng) and Yinxu (殷墟, Yīnxū) and you’ll encounter Chinese writing on oracle bones (甲骨, jiǎgǔ) from more than 3,000 years ago.
Suddenly the little question:
“What does that Chinese character say?”
becomes:
“How did this writing tradition survive and change across more than three millennia?”

Don’t look at a wall of Chinese characters and think:
“I can’t read any of this.”
Find one.
Then another.
出 — out.
入 — in.
站 — station.
男 — male.
女 — female.
China hasn’t suddenly become readable.
But it has become:
a little less unreadable.
And that’s a surprisingly satisfying travel moment.
