Why Do Some Restaurants in China Make You Scan a QR Code to Order?

You sit down at a restaurant in China.

You wait for the menu.

Instead, someone points at a little square on the table.

A QR code.

And you think:

“Wait… is THAT the menu? 😂”

🥟 The Quick Bite

Quite often, yes.

Many restaurants in China use table QR codes that open a digital menu, often through a mini program (小程序, xiǎochéngxù) inside an app such as WeChat.

You scan.

Choose your dishes.

Place the order.

Depending on the restaurant, you may also pay through the same system.

🌍 If You’re Trying to Place It…

Think of the QR menus that became familiar in restaurants in many countries.

Now take the idea further:

menu + ordering + sometimes payment

can all happen through the phone.

That’s closer to the Chinese experience.

🍜 Why Does the Restaurant Do It This Way?

For the restaurant, one QR code can connect each table directly to its ordering system.

Digital menus can also be updated without printing new ones, show photographs of dishes and send orders electronically.

For regular Chinese customers already using WeChat and mobile payments, the process can be extremely quick.

Sit → scan → order → eat.

😅 But What If I Can’t Use It?

This is where an elegant local system can suddenly become less elegant for an international traveler.

The mini program may be in Chinese.

It may expect a service or account setup you aren’t familiar with.

Or you may simply prefer talking to a human being. 😂

Ask the staff.

Many restaurants can help you order, and some still provide printed or other menus.

Don’t assume that seeing a QR code means:

“No QR code = no dinner.”

👀 Look a Little Closer

The QR code may also be tied to your particular table.

So rather than being just a link to a restaurant website, it can tell the ordering system:

these dishes belong to Table 18.

That’s why identical little codes may appear on every table.

🥟 One Last Bite

The first time a waiter points at a QR code instead of handing you a menu, it can feel strangely impersonal.

A few meals later, you may find yourself sitting down and automatically reaching for your phone.

Scan first. Dumplings later. 😂

Another tiny piece of everyday China that becomes normal remarkably quickly.

See China. Understand It Better.
