Dad & Elaine were coming back from Shanxi.
After about 2½ hours on the high-speed train from Taiyuan (太原, Tàiyuán)…
Beijing.
Back in Beijing.
We stepped off at Beijing Fengtai Railway Station (北京丰台站, Běijīng Fēngtái Zhàn).
Shanxi behind us.
Beijing ahead.

Dad had company.

Our DiDi was here.
“Boys, car’s here.”
Time to GO.
Into Beijing.
Door open.
Elaine in.
Dad in.
Beijing, here we come.
We headed towards our hotel area in central Beijing.
Food. Now.
Bags could wait.
Hotel could wait.
Elaine was hungry.
We spotted 南城香 (Nánchéngxiāng).
Bright red sign.
Lights on.
Tables full.
People eating.
Dad looked through the window.
That was enough.
GO IN.
Dad: “Where’s the Menu?”
We sat down.
Dad looked at the table.
Then around the restaurant.
Hmm.
“Elaine… where’s the menu?”
Elaine looked at Dad.
Then pointed at the corner of the table.
“Dad. Scan here.”
😂
Oh.
There.
The little QR code.
Dad took out his phone.
Scan.
Now Dad’s Hungry Too.
Scan to order on the phone.
And Then Food Arrived.
And across the table…
Elaine was eating too.
Rice.
Vegetables.
Soft eggplant soaking up the sauce.
No famous Beijing attraction.
No grand itinerary.
Just Dad & Elaine…
hungry…
back in Beijing…
and very happy to be eating.

Move. Eat. Repeat.
Taiyuan.
High-speed rail.
Beijing Fengtai.
Wait for the DiDi.
“Boys, car’s here.”
Into central Beijing.
Then Elaine gets hungry.
Find a busy restaurant.
Sit down.
“Where’s the menu?”
“Dad. Scan here.”
Scan.
Order.
Food arrives.
Eat.
Sometimes travelling China really is that simple.
And delicious.
DAD SAYS GO! →
Take the train.
Call the DiDi.
And when somebody says…
“I’m hungry.”
Don’t overthink it.
Find somewhere busy.
Sit down.
