Why China Needs More Than One Visit: Seeing, Understanding and Discovering China

Our China Journey Did Not End After the First Trip — It Only Began

Many travellers planning their first China trip ask the same question:

“How many days do I need to see China?”

7 days?
14 days?
3 weeks?

After years of travelling across China with my daughter Elaine, from Beijing’s Forbidden City to Xi’an’s Terracotta Warriors, from ancient Yellow River civilisation sites to China’s modern high-speed rail network, I have slowly discovered something:

You do not finish China.

You return to China.

Because every journey reveals a different layer.

The first time, you see China.

The second time, you begin to UNDERSTAND China.

The third time, you start DISCOVERING the China hidden behind the famous attractions.

“Beijing — where many travellers first meet China’s imperial story.”

Trip 1: See China — The Great First Impression

第一次认识中国
(First time getting to know China)

For most travellers, the first China vacation begins with the famous places.

And honestly, it should.

There is a reason why millions dream about:

  • the Great Wall of China from Beijing
  • the Forbidden City (故宫)
  • Beijing’s ancient streets
  • Xi’an Terracotta Warriors (兵马俑)
  • China’s modern skyline
  • high-speed trains

These are the icons.

Your first Beijing tour lets you experience the scale of Chinese civilisation.

Standing inside the Forbidden City, you understand imperial China.

Walking on the Great Wall, you understand protection and history.

Seeing the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, you understand ambition and empire.

These are not just tourist attractions.

They are the front doors into China’s story.

“Following the Yellow River — discovering the roots behind China’s civilisation.”

Trip 2: Understand China — Connecting the Stories

第二次理解中国
(Understanding China)

The second trip is when China becomes more interesting.

You stop asking:

“What famous places should I visit?”

You start asking:

“Why did these places matter?”

This happened to us.

After visiting Beijing and Xi’an, we started looking beyond the famous names.

Why was Xi’an so important?

Why did Chinese civilisation develop along the Yellow River?

Why were ancient capitals located where they were?

Suddenly, places became connected.

Xi’an was not just Terracotta Warriors.

It was the beginning of a unified China.

Shanxi was not just old buildings.

It preserved ancient Chinese architecture and culture.

The Yellow River (黄河) was not just a river.

It carried thousands of years of civilisation memories.

“Sometimes history is not inside a museum. Sometimes it is still standing quietly after thousands of years.”

Trip 3: Discover China — The Hidden Stories Begin

第三次发现中国
(Discovering China)

This is where China becomes FASCINATING.

Because beyond the famous China tourist attractions are places many international visitors have never heard of.

We travelled to:

Zhoukoudian 周口店

Where the human story begins.

Taosi 陶寺

Where early society started forming.

Yao Temple 尧庙

Where ancient memories and legends continue.

Yin Xu 殷墟

Where oracle bones (甲骨文) changed legends into written history.

These places are not always on a normal China travel guide.

But they changed the way we understood China.

Before the Great Wall.

Before the Forbidden City.

Before emperors.

There was already a civilisation forming.

“Ancient stories connected by modern China.”

China High-Speed Rail Changed How We Explore

中国高铁
(China High-Speed Rail)

One reason modern travellers can DISCOVER China differently today is the high-speed rail system.

China travel by train has completely changed what is possible.

A journey that once took days can now take hours.

You can wake up in Beijing.

Explore another ancient city.

Return by evening.

For us, China high-speed rail became more than transportation.

It became a bridge connecting different chapters of Chinese civilisation.

Why Returning Matters

Some countries are easy to summarise.

China is different.

China has layers:

第一层 — the first layer:
The famous sights.

第二层 — the second layer:
The stories behind them.

第三层 — the third layer:
The civilisation connecting everything.

A first trip shows you China’s beauty.

A second trip shows you China’s meaning.

A third trip shows you how much more there is to DISCOVER.

“Our China journey is still unfinished. Some chapters we have walked. Others are waiting.”

Our China Journey Continues

Even after years of travelling, our map is still unfinished.

There are still ancient capitals we have not visited.

There are still small towns with big stories waiting.

There are still conversations, streets, museums and everyday moments ahead.

That is why ChinaTravelBug continues.

A father and daughter discovering China — one journey, one story, one place at a time.
