How High-Speed Rail Changed Our Father-Daughter China Journey

From the Grand Canal 大运河 to China’s Bullet Trains 高铁 — A Different China Travel Guide

“For us, China high-speed rail is not just transport. It became part of the journey itself — connecting thousands of years of stories across China.”

The Moment We Realised China Travel Had Changed

When many travellers plan their first trip to China, they usually think about famous places:

The Great Wall 长城 in Beijing.
The Terracotta Warriors 兵马俑 in Xi’an.
The Forbidden City 故宫.
Beautiful mountains, ancient towns and Chinese food.

We thought the same during our first China trips.

But after travelling deeper across China, Elaine and I discovered something unexpected:

One of the most fascinating China experiences was not only where we arrived.

It was how we moved between them.

The high-speed train.

高铁 (Gāotiě).

China High-Speed Rail: More Than Just a Fast Train

For many first-time visitors, taking a China bullet train is simply a convenient way to travel:

Beijing to Xi’an.

Shanghai to Hangzhou.

Guangzhou to Shenzhen.

Fast. Clean. Comfortable.

And yes — for a China vacation, it completely changes your planning.

A journey that once took overnight can now become a few hours.

Suddenly your China itinerary expands.

You can explore:

Beijing 北京

Xi’an 西安

Luoyang 洛阳

Shanxi 山西

smaller historic cities most foreign visitors never reach.

But to understand why this matters, we need to look backwards.

Very far backwards.

Because China has always been about connection.

Before High-Speed Rail: There Was the Grand Canal

More than a thousand years before high-speed rail, ancient China faced a similar challenge:

How do you connect a huge country?

How do you move:

  • people
  • food
  • information
  • ideas

across enormous distances?

One answer was:

The Grand Canal.

大运河 (Dàyùnhé).

It became one of ancient China’s greatest engineering achievements.

While Europe developed around many different kingdoms and cities, China developed a different challenge:

How do you hold a large civilisation together?

Roads.

Canals.

Administration.

Communication.

Connection.

From Ancient Canals to Modern Railways

Standing inside a modern China high-speed railway station, I sometimes think:

The technology changed.

The question stayed similar.

Ancient China asked:

“How do we connect Beijing with the rest of China?”

Modern China asks:

“How do we connect 1.4 billion people?”

Different centuries.

Same civilisation challenge.

How High-Speed Rail Changed Our Father-Daughter China Journey

Our ChinaTravelBug journey would have been completely different without 高铁.

It allowed Elaine and I to travel beyond the usual tourist route.

From Beijing, we explored:

Beijing 北京 — The Capital Story

The Forbidden City 故宫.
The Great Wall 长城.
The Central Axis 中轴线.

A city about governance and history.

Xi’an 西安 — Where Empire Began

The Terracotta Warriors 兵马俑.

The ancient city walls.

The starting point of the Silk Road 丝绸之路.

“Bing Ma Zai at home — discovering ancient China.”

“Some journeys are not about seeing bigger attractions, but understanding deeper stories.”

Qufu 曲阜 — The Ideas Behind China

Because of high-speed rail, we could continue beyond the famous cities.

We visited Qufu, hometown of Confucius 孔子.

A place that explains not just what China built —

but what China believed.

Shanxi 山西 — The China Many Travellers Miss

High-speed rail also brought us into places many first-time visitors overlook.

Pingyao 平遥.

Ancient temples.

Historic towns.

Stories preserved away from modern skylines.

These places showed us something important:

China is not only Beijing and Shanghai.

China is thousands of years of stories spread across the land.

A Different Way to Plan Your First China Trip

Many travellers ask:

“How many cities should I visit in China?”

Our answer changed.

Don’t just collect cities.

Follow stories.

A possible China travel route:

7 Days — Classic Introduction

Beijing
+
Xi’an

Capital + Ancient Empire.

14 Days — Go Deeper

Beijing

Tianjin 天津

Xi’an

Shanxi

Ancient China + modern transformation.

“Exploring China not as separate attractions, but as one continuous journey.”

21 Days — The Civilisation Journey

Follow China through time:

Zhoukoudian 周口店
Human beginnings

Taosi 陶寺
Early civilisation

Xi’an 西安
First empire

Qufu 曲阜
Ideas

Beijing 北京
Governance

High-Speed Rail 高铁
Modern China

Why Every First China Trip Should Include a High-Speed Train

Even if you only visit Beijing and Xi’an:

Take the train.

Look outside the window.

Watch cities become countryside.

Watch old villages appear beside new bridges.

Watch a civilisation moving.

Because sometimes the journey between destinations tells a story too.

The Great Wall shows how China protected itself.

The Grand Canal shows how China connected itself.

The High-Speed Rail shows how China moves forward.

Three different eras.

One continuous story.

That is the China we discovered.

And that is the China we hope more travellers will experience.
