The Perfect First Trip to China Itinerary: Beijing, Xi’an and Beyond (7, 14 & 21 Days China Travel Guide)

A ChinaTravelBUG journey from the Great Wall of China from Beijing to the Terracotta Warriors of Xi’an — discovering China’s history, culture, high-speed rail and hidden places beyond the usual tourist route.

A 7-, 14- & 21- Day China Travel Guide Through History, Culture and Modern China

Planning your first trip to China can feel overwhelming.

China is huge.

Should you visit Beijing or Shanghai?

Should you start with Beijing or Xi’an?

How many days do you need?

When Elaine and I first started traveling deeper through China, we discovered something important:

A great China vacation is not about rushing through the longest checklist of attractions.

It is about choosing places that help you understand the story of China.

From the Great Wall of China in Beijing, to the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, from ancient towns to modern high-speed rail, every stop can reveal another chapter.

This is our ChinaTravelBUG way of planning a first China itinerary.

See the famous places.

Feel the local life.

Discover the stories behind them.

7 Days in China: The Classic First China Trip

Beijing 北京 + Xi’an 西安

If this is your first China tour, I usually recommend starting with two cities:

Beijing and Xi’an.

Why?

Because together, they answer two simple questions:

Xi’an:
“How did China begin?”

Beijing:
“How did China continue?”

Days 1–4: Beijing 北京 — Discover China’s Capital

Chinese word:

北京 (Běijīng) = Northern Capital

Beijing is usually the best starting point for a first China visit.

It combines:

  • ancient history
  • famous landmarks
  • modern city life

Many Beijing China tourist attractions are not just beautiful buildings.

They tell stories.

“From childhood wonder to deeper understanding — returning to the Great Wall years later.”

Great Wall 长城

Chinese:

长 (cháng) = long
城 (chéng) = wall / city wall

The Great Wall is often the dream image of China.

But when Elaine and I visited, the question became:

Not only:

“How long is it?”

But:

“Why did generations of people build it?”

It tells a story about protection, geography and civilization.

“Panda’s Beijing journey — discovering the stories behind China’s ancient capital.”

Forbidden City 故宫

Chinese:

故 (gù) = old / former
宫 (gōng) = palace

The Forbidden City is one of the most important Beijing attractions.

But beyond photos, it answers:

How was such a huge civilization organized?

Walk slowly.

Look at the gates.

The central line.

The details.

A palace becomes a story.

Other Beijing things to do:

But also leave time for ordinary Beijing.

Ride the subway.

Eat breakfast near local communities.

Watch daily life.

That is also China.

Days 5–7: Xi’an 西安 — Where China Became China

Chinese:

西 (xī) = west
安 (ān) = peace

Most travelers know Xi’an because of:

Terracotta Warriors 兵马俑.

And yes, they are incredible.

But Xi’an is much more.

This was once ancient Chang’an 长安 — one of the world’s greatest historical cities.

Explore:

Terracotta Warriors 兵马俑

The army of China’s first emperor.

Xi’an City Wall 西安城墙

Walk above a living city.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda 大雁塔

A reminder of the Silk Road and cultural exchange.

A 7-day trip gives you:

Beijing:
Imperial China

Xi’an:
Ancient China

A perfect introduction.

14 Days in China: Go Beyond the Famous Places

If you have two weeks, do not just add more cities.

Add more stories.

“Tianjin — a different chapter between imperial China and modern China.”

Add Tianjin 天津 — China Meets the Modern World

Only around 30 minutes from Beijing by high-speed rail.

Chinese:

天 (tiān) = heaven
津 (jīn) = crossing / port

Many travelers overlook Tianjin.

Elaine and I visited Wudadao 五大道 and discovered another side of China.

European-style streets.

Modern history.

Early technology.

A city where old China encountered a changing world.

“Some history is not only remembered. Some history is still standing.”

Add Shanxi 山西 — Ancient China Still Standing

Chinese:

山 (shān) = mountain
西 (xī) = west

Shanxi surprised us.

It feels like an open-air museum.

Places:

21 Days in China: The Civilization Journey

For travelers who love history and culture, China becomes even more fascinating.

You can follow a timeline.

Before China

Zhoukoudian 周口店

The story of early humans.

Early Civilisation

Taosi 陶寺
Yao Temple 尧庙

How society developed.

Ancient Writing

Yin Xu 殷墟 (a UNESCO heritage site)

Where China’s early writing was discovered.

Ideas

Confucius 孔子 in Qufu 曲阜 (a UNESCO heritage site)

Laozi 老子 traditions

Empire

Xi’an

Qin.

Han.

Tang.

Governance

Beijing

Modern Transformation

Tianjin.

High-speed rail.

Final Thoughts: The Best China Trip Is Not About Seeing Everything

China is too big to finish.

Even after many journeys, Elaine and I are still discovering.

Your first trip should not try to see all of China.

Instead:

Choose places that tell meaningful stories.

Walk slowly.

Ask questions.

Meet ordinary life.

Because the best China travel memories often come not only from famous attractions —

but from finally understanding why they matter.

Welcome to discover China together!
